Pinar&Viola - Ecstatic Surface Design

de Verenigde Sandbergen

Concept/design of de Verenigde Sandbergen, magazine of the Masters of Rietveld Academie, Sandberg Instituut.

The conceptual framework of the new design is a critique on today's advertising culture which gradually makes the contemporary men lazy. We find ourselves in a culture where printed matter is expected to make the buyer seize the content not more than a computer clicking time. Bodoni for fashion, Helvetica for hipsters and Garamond for economists.
De Verenigde Sandbergen intends to distance itself from these common frameworks or references that the mainstream obeys without further questioning. Every department has its own visual aspect gathered in the same global concept.
VS061 is published by the fine arts department of the institute, while VS062 and VS063 are published by the design department. VS061's design takes it's common form from bible-look-alike old novels, while VS062 and VS063 are designed as a stack of previously printed documents. Both of the designs confuses the reader due to their impossibility of placing them what he/she recognized in advance.
