Pinar&Viola - Ecstatic Surface Design

Which one is Lichtenstein?

Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam is currently closed because of a major restoration. Thus, their entire art collection is out of sight. For this reason, the museum initiated Visibly Absent, a project where they asked young artists and designers to represent an icon from their collection in the city of Amsterdam.

For the second edition of Visibly Absent, the icon that Pinar&Viola choose to represent is As I opened Fire, triptych by Roy Lichtenstein.

Lichtenstein based his work on images from comic books. The three images of As I Opened Fire are inspired by the story in the American comic book All American Men of War. DC Comics Issue No: 90. Pinar&Viola found the original comic book strip that Lichtenstein based his painting on, and placed in the design among other comic book strips.

Which one is Lichtenstein? was exposed in the form of posters in the streets of Amsterdam during the week of 13-19 May 2009, and also in light boxes at the central train station of Amsterdam from May 2009, till September 2009.
